Dear Kim:

It is the Fourth of July. People are celebrating with barbeques and going to sales at Famous Barr and setting off fireworks. Of course if fireworks are the criteria for marking the date, then it has been the Fourth of July for days. Because people have been setting off fireworks for quite some time.

I don’t like fireworks. The visual can be fun although frankly, it looks like more of the same after the first few. What I don’t like is the sound. The loud, unexpecting popping.

That and my fear that someone will get hurt. My maternal instincts that never called loud enough to actually have a child get called into play big time around fireworks. I worry about things as benign as sparklers. About how they can backfire. About how the newspapers always print reports of people getting burned or blinded in the days preceding the fourth as precautionary measure then show spectacular photos of fireworks the next day.

Hmmm . . .

I could write about where we are as a country on this Fourth of July. But I find the continual erosion of civil liberties so distressing, I guess it is easier for me to go to a default position to talk about the potential malevolence of fireworks.

Later,

Joan
